The name box crab comes from their distinctly box-like carapace, and the name shame-faced is from the way the crab’s claws fold up and cover its face, as if it were hiding it. This crab is popular in Sanlúcar where the females are preferred because they contain edible coral (roe) – the bright orange stuff inside the shell.

It is worth noting that this crab is not the same as the “King crab” found in Arctic waters which is also known as Cangrejo Real.
